Electrical Corona Detection

Networx3 UAV is unique in the UK for being able to provide a drone-based fault detection system for electrical power lines and substations, using a drone that is able to fly in extreme weather conditions.

We have a corona camera (corona is the glow round a conductor at high potential) which is mounted to our DJI Matrice drone. With this drone we are able to fly over electrical power cables and substations and the specialised camera (with dual sensors in UV and Visible) we can detect costly power leakages that can be subsequently repaired.

The camera takes video footage of the electrical elements that require inspection and reveals sources of electrical corona, acting as high sensitivity testing equipment which provides reliable and accurate information about electrical (and mechanical) faults. The camera also works in conjunction with external GPS and ambient condition information which then integrates with the footage recorded.

Main advantages of using a drone for Electrical Corona Detection:

  • Large geographical areas can be covered quickly
  • Survey work done at a fraction of current costs
  • A very safe procedure

There are two significant benefits of the corona detection camera mounted to one of our drones.

Firstly, it has the capability to detect power leakages over long lengths of power cable or covering the whole area of a large substation, generating reliable information in a fraction of the time that it would take a team of individuals to do the same work. The second main benefit is that the drone can do the work at a fraction of the cost of a team doing the work. There will far less reliance on some of the equipment that will need to be hired or purchased for a team of specialists to do the equivalent work.

At Networx3, all of our pilots are trained to the highest standards which makes us almost unique in our industry. They are both Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) registered and GVC certified. We are also very experienced pilots, and all the drones we use are of the highest standard or state of the art.
