Wind Turbine Drone Inspection

Wind turbine maintenance using drones for inspection is more cost-effective and safer than traditional methods of inspection. Traditionally these inspections involve a team of expert rope climbers who travel to the Wind Farm.

This team will inspect the blade as they descend from the centre of the turbine. The process is slow, relatively expensive, and requires significant health and safety management.

The use of a drone cannot totally replace the physical inspection to determine what maintenance is required, but importantly drones can be used to direct the activity of the climbing team more effectively and enable a more rapid coverage of the turbine and the Wind Farm site. The cost savings from the use of a UAV mean that turbines can be inspected more frequently if required.

Main advantages of using a drone for wind turbine inspections:

  • Significantly reduces the need and cost of using rope climbers for physical inspections
  • Planning, organisation and preparation time of maintenance is reduced significantly by UAV's
  • Accurate results are achieved in a fraction of the time required for previous inspection methods

The drone that we would use for this type of inspection is the DJI Matrice 210 V2 RTK which is excellent for wind turbine maintenance inspections. It is durable and versatile, and it features sophisticated data encryption, so it cannot be easily hacked.

The drone also has a built-in obstacle avoidance system, and it provides real time information about any planes or helicopters nearby. Importantly this UAV provides ultra- accurate 3D positioning, so it maintains stability extremely well, meaning you can get close to the target without the worry of drift.
