UK Go Ahead for Beyond Visual Line of Site Testing

May 24, 2021

The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) has given authorisation to a drone tech company to run trials enabling drones to be routinely flown without the operator having to continually maintain direct line-of-site.

This is a milestone in the field of autonomous drone flights, where using the same airspace as other aircraft is a routine, everyday reality. These trials are part of a test project which, if successful, could be opened up to a broader market. Networx3uav will be at the forefront of developments as they occur.

The drone tech company, sees.ai, can now undertake these drone flights – known as Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) – at three agreed sites in the UK with the proviso that the drones fly below 150ft.

BVLOS flights are being used by Sees.ai to test and establish how safely and effectively plant, equipment and buildings in an industrial environment can be inspected, monitored, and maintained from a remote control centre.

The safety and robustness of BVLOS and the system associated with it can be tested within this context, and it will, hopefully, provide the launchpad to challenging applications and missions over time as well as the start of a new phase of growth for drone usage in industrial and commercial settings.
