Solar Panel Inspection

Drones are an ideal solution for solar panel inspections. Often solar panels are placed either at height on buildings, or they are ground based on large solar farm installations, both of which are difficult to manage.

Solar panels need to be regularly inspected and checked, and the use of drones is the perfect answer.   When installed at height, there is no need to scale a ladder, build any scaffolding or walk out on to a dangerous ledge to do an inspection.

We are able to produce highly accurate high resolution maps and 3D models of the panels very quickly and the data can be downloaded and analysed back at base. Any issues such as cracking or leaking of the solar panels can be identified in the thermal maps that are created during drone checking.

Main advantages of using a drone for solar panel inspections:

  • Large areas of panels are covered in significantly less time than human inspection
  • Roof-based panel installations can be inspected more easily and safely
  • Planning and preparation time required is significantly reduced, saving money

Solar farms tend to be large installations and drones come into their own by being able to scan a number of widely–spread solar panels and produce a map which will make clear any defects or cracks in those panels. The main advantage is that it using a "solar panel drone" it can be done so much more quickly than using a ground-based thermal camera. This will save money as well as time.

The DJI Matrice 210 V2 RTK is the perfect solar panel drone for this scenario with its thermal imaging capability, its highly accurate 3D positioning which will allow us to create the detailed maps of the solar panels that are often required.
